What are Equities?

Equities (also known as stocks or shares) are individual parts of the total ownership of a listed company. Owning a share is therefore equivalent to being a part owner of a company. As such, shareholders may receive a portion of company profits in the form of a dividend and vote at shareholder meetings.

What are Options?

Options are contracts that give the owner the right - not the obligation - to buy or sell a particular underlying asset at a particular price (strike price) on or before a particular date (expiry). In exchange, the purchaser of the option pays a premium to the seller. Options contracts are traded on an exchange and as such may be bought or sold (written). Options are used by traders to minimise risk, known as hedging.
