What are Futures?

A futures contract is an obligation to buy or sell an underlying asset (often a physical commodity) at a predetermined future date and price. Futures contracts detail the quality and quantity of the underlying asset and are standardised so they can be traded on an exchange. Futures markets allow for very high leverage compared to stock markets and are often used in commerce to hedge against the price movements of an underlying asset.
